Mark 2:18-22

Fasting has value only as a means to an end. The purpose for which countless children of the Father of all times and peoples have disciplined themselves in eating and drinking is to draw them nearer to their Heavenly Father in whatever shape or form they conceived Him. And such action, wisely followed, is good. The Father is honoured in their offering, they are themselves strengthened and illuminated by their self-discipline. The situation has long been present in the world created for joyful growth towards fulfilment where the beloved children of the Father perish for lack of food, and the lack of living water. And other of the Father's beloved children have plenty. It is the duty, the solemn, urgent , loving duty of each and every child of the Father who has provision in plenty to help provide for those in need , even to the sacrificing of such as can be spared from the table of plenty.

And those most deeply committed to the loving purpose of their Heavenly Father in caring for their fellowmen will pray until they are weary, from time to time, and deny themselves too, in the cause of the deprived and those who through no fault of their own suffer hardship and pain.
